Rapid forecast of tsunami wave heights from a database of pre-computed simulations, and application during the 2011 Tohoku tsunami in French Polynesia

چکیده
[1] We present a method for the rapid estimation of tsunami wave heights, either in the deep Pacific Basin, or at specific shore locations. It uses a database of 260 pre-computed scenarios of generic sources distributed along the Pacific trenches, and can provide an estimate of wave heights within minutes of the location of the earthquake and the estimation of its moment. The method is tested against a set of DART data, and of 51 maregraph records in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands. It was used in real time to successfully predict tsunami amplitudes in Polynesia during the 2011 Tohoku alert. Citation: Reymond, D., E. A. Okal, H. Hébert, and M. Rapid forecasting of tsunami runup heights from 2-D numerical simulations
We propose a method to compute tsunami runup heights that is based on an integration of numerical, 2-D shallow-water modelling and an analytical, 1-D long-wave runup theory. This approach provides a faster forecast of tsunami runup heights than a complicated coastal inundation model. Through simulations of potential tsunami scenarios, this approach can also be applied to long-term tsunami predi...
متن کاملEstimation of Runup Heights of the 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake Tsunami Based on Numerical Simulations
A strong earthquake (M9.0) occurred at 14 h 46 m (JST) on March 11, 2011 in the Pacific Ocean east of the Tohoku district in the northeast part of Honshu Island, Japan. The earthquake was accompanied by a large tsunami. The main goal of this study is to use numerical modelling to reproduce the observed characteristics of the 2011 tsunami. First, the water elevation records of DART buoys, coasta...
متن کاملDifferent depths of near-trench slips of the 1896 Sanriku and 2011 Tohoku earthquakes
The 1896 Sanriku earthquake was a typical ‘tsunami earthquake’ which caused large tsunami despite its weak ground shaking. It occurred along the Japan Trench in the northern tsunami source area of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake where a delayed tsunami generation has been proposed. Hence the relation between the 1896 and 2011 tsunami sources is an important scientific as well as societal issue. The ...
متن کاملMapping Coherent, Time-varying Wavefronts from the 2011 Tohoku Tsunami into Enhanced, Time-dependent Warning Messages
Recent results are presented to illustrate how predictions of tsunami wave impact and tsunami warning messages can be improved by including information about multiple, large-amplitude wave arrivals over longer time durations and at refined spatial resolution. A deployment of ocean bottom seismometers off the coast of southern California recorded the March 2011 Tohoku tsunami on 22 differential ...
متن کاملSensitivity of tsunami wave profiles and inundation simulations to earthquake slip and fault geometry for the 2011 Tohoku earthquake
In this study, we develop stochastic random-field slip models for the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and conduct a rigorous sensitivity analysis of tsunami hazards with respect to the uncertainty of earthquake slip and fault geometry. Synthetic earthquake slip distributions generated from the modified Mai-Beroza method captured key features of inversion-based source representations of the mega-thrust e...
